a doll for Penny

I made this doll from the Kit, Chloe and Louise pattern, to go to a little blond friend of ours. Our friend Penny is a super talented and creative girl and I was so pleased when her mom said she was loving the toys I’ve been making because I’d already had this one in mind for her. Never too old for dolls!

Her outfits were all made from recycled baby/kids clothes. I am definitely still loving this process, although it’s not always as quick and easy as I imagine it will be. I’ve probably had as many failures as successes but I learn a helpful trick each time. Once I have it nailed down I’ll post some tutorials. Basically I just use the pattern pieces from the clothing in the pattern and start cutting trying to keep as many finished hems and cute details as possible. If my Bernina was up and running I think these would be a breeze but as it is I’m having lots of machine-eating-knits delays. It’s worth it though because it’s so nice to have soft, cozy outfits for these soft, cozy dolls.

  1. You are right, never too old for dolls, especially a sweet doll like this with a cute wardrobe.

  2. So adorable! Does the pattern have instructions for mixing yarns for hair as you did? Also what yarns did you use for this girl’s hair? I love the chunky look!

  3. Love Pennys doll! Oh the hair, the hair!!!!
I’m so glad you shared how you are using used clothing to make doll clothes. My granddaughter really wants pants for her Louise doll (and for her baby doll). Do you ever do pants?

  4. Yes! I’ve made some other pants from the same pattern I used to make the pajama pants above. I’m using this pattern as a jumping off point…

  5. Hi Kelly,
I pulled strands from both balls and made one ball to work from for this gal. For the next gal I just pulled from both as I was working, more difficult but I don’t have any mixed yarn ball leftovers that way. The yarns for this doll are…

  6. Thank you for replying, great idea to wind the two strands into one ball. I want to make one for Christmas.

  7. Thank you so much, Hillary! PJs would be fun for her to have and I think I can manage pants for her baby doll too. You’re a dear!

  8. Darling! I love the lettuce edging on the pj’s. Super-cute.

  9. Gorgeous!!! 🙂 Do you have a pattern for the shirt and the skirt?

  10. Hi Andrea, for the shirt I used the shirt pattern included in the Kit, Chloe and Louise pattern, slightly modified (I straightened the arms). The skirt is just a rectangle. The gathered skirt is just a longer rectangle gathered 🙂 Both were cut from recycled baby clothes so lots of details were in the original clothes.
